This is a list as of the end of the 2023 season, of the top 500 Major League Baseball home run hitters. In the sport of baseball, a home run is a hit in which the batter scores by circling all the bases and reaching home plate in one play, without benefit of a fielding error. This can be accomplished by hitting the ball out of play in fair territory (a conventional home run), or by an inside the park home run, where the batter circles the bases before the ball can be delivered to a fielder to tag him out.
Barry Bonds holds the Major League Baseball career home run record with 762. He passed Hank Aaron, who is second with 755, on August 7, 2007. Third is Babe Ruth with 714, and fourth is Albert Pujols with 703, rounding out the 700 Club. Alex Rodriguez (696), Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey, Jr. (630), Jim Thome (612) and Sammy Sosa (609) are the only other players to have hit 600 or more.
Bonds' total was limited by teams essentially refusing to sign him for the 2008 season. Ruth's total was limited by spending the early part of his career as a pitcher. Mays' total was limited by years in the Army during the Korean War. Several players, including Ted Williams and Hank Greenberg, gave up a number of years to serve in World War II.
The current cutoff for the top Five Hundred is 166 career home runs. The most recent additions to the list were Corey Seager in September 2023,Jorge Soler and Rafael Devers in August 2023, Gary Sanchez, Shohei Ohtani, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy in July 2023, Xander Bogaerts and Carlos Correa in June 2023, Jason Heyward and Pete Alonso in May 2023, Hunter Renfroe in April 2023, Javier Baez and Justin Turner in September 2022, Matt Olson in August 2022, Adam Duvall in July 2022, C.J. Cron, Randal Grichuk and Joc Pederson in June 2022, Trevor Story, Joey Gallo and Kyle Schwarber in May 2022, Aaron Judge and Francisco Lindor in April 2022.
Aaron Judge set the American League single-season home run record with 62 in 2022. He hit his final home run in game number 161. He hit #61 in game 156, leaving him tied with Ruth at 60 for home runs in 154 games (the famous Maris asterisk).
Only 3 players with 400 home runs are active as of October 2, 2023. Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers has 511 (4 in 2023), Nelson Cruz of the Padres has 464 (5 in 2023), and Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees has 401 (23 in 2023).
