Jed Lowrie was born on April 17, 1984, in Salem, Oregon. He is currently the starting shortstop for the Boston Red Sox.
[edit] Early Career
Lowrie attended Stanford University where, in 2004, he was awarded Pac-10 Player of the Year honors and was selected for the First Team All-American by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and Sports Weekly. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round of the 2005 amateur draft. He was officially signed on July 1, by Nakia Hill, and was assigned to the short-season Lowell Spinners, where he remained for the rest of the season. He spent the 2006 season with the Advanced-A Wilmington Blue Rocks, where he struggled, hitting only .262.
2007 was Lowrie's professional breakout season. He batted .297 with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. Lowrie was an Eastern League All-Star, and was named the Sea Dogs Most Valuable Player and the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year.
[edit] 2008
Lowrie began the 2008 season as the starting shortstop for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox of the International League. However, due to injuries to both Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell and utility infielder Alex Cora caused Lowrie, along with Joe Thurston, to be called up to the Show. He was called up on April 10, and made his major league debut on April 15, driving in three runs in a victory over the Cleveland Indians. He remained with the Red Sox until May 11, when Cora was activated. He was called up for a second time on July 12, when starting shortstop Julio Lugo went down with an injury. Lowrie was slated to compete with Cora over the starting shortstop job, however, Lowrie far outperformed Cora, playing at a level far above even where Lugo was at before his injury. This has led to much speculation that he will retain the job even after Lugo returns.
