10/1/04: Ichiro Makes Hits-tory!
September 20, 2010
Texas Rangers 3 at Seattle Mariners 8, F -- A capacity crowd of 45,473 gathered at Safeco Field to watch Ichiro lay claim to a record that stood for 84 years, and he didn't make them wait long. In his first at-bat in the first inning, he collected his 257th hit of the season, tying him with George Sisler, who set the season mark in 1,920. Then, in his next at-bat in the third inning, in front of three generations of the Sisler family, Ichiro collected hit No. 258, a hard grounder up the middle, and the record books were re-written. As a side note, the hit in the first inning was Ichiro's 919th of his four-year MLB career, giving him the new record for hits over any four-year span in ML history, breaking Bill Terry's record from 1,929-1,932.
