- 1916 - The New York Yankees acquired slugger Frank Baker from the Philadelphia Athletics for $37,500. Baker had sat out the 1915 season.

- 1931 - The New York Yankees spring training facility in St. Petersburg, Florida, was renamed Miller Huggins Field in honor of their late manager, who died in 1929.

- 1956 - The Kansas City Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates canceled an exhibition game in Birmingham, Alabama, because of a local ordinance barring black players from playing against whites.
1960s[]
- 1964 - Chicago Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs, 22, was found dead in his private plane which crashed two days before near Provo, Utah. As a rookie in 1962, Hubbs had played in 78 consecutive games without making an error.

- 1990 - Major league owners officially locked the players out of spring training. The decision delayed the start of spring training. The lockout will last until March 18, when the two sides reach a settlement.
