Edgar Ramón Martínez (born October 23, 1981 in Güigüe, Venezuela) is a relief pitcher in minor league baseball who plays for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in the Boston Red Sox organization. He bats and throws right handed.

CareerEdit

Martínez was signed as an undrafted free agent catcher in 1998 by the Boston Red Sox. In 1999 Martínez started his professional career playing for the Gulf Coast Red Sox. Over the next five years he never rose above Single-A+ level. Martínez was converted from catcher to a pitcher in July 2004.[1]

His fastball reaches 97 mph and he also throws a decent changeup and a slider. The transition to pitching showed signs of success later in 2005, when he posted a 2.10 ERA with seven saves and 46 strikeouts in 34.1 innings for Class-A Wilmington. Promoted to Double-A Portland, he finished with a 1.50 ERA, one save, and 13 strikeouts in 18.0 innings. In 2007 he played for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate the Pawtucket Red Sox.[2]
