Dustin William Brown was born on June 19, 1982 in Orange, CA. He is a catcher currently playing for the Pawtucket Red Sox in the Boston Red Sox organization.
Early Career[]
Brown attended Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley, AZ, and was drafted by the Red Sox in the 35th round of the 2000 amateur draft. Brown did not sign with the Red Sox right away, however. He attended Yavapai Community College until he signed with the Red Sox in May 2001.
2008[]
Brown's contract was purchased by the Red Sox on November 29, 2007. Had they not placed him on the 40-man roster, he would have become a minor league free agent. Brown was invited to Spring Training, but did not make the team. He accompanied the Red Sox on their trip to Japan to begin the season, as a backup in case either Jason Varitek or Kevin Cash were injured, but he did not play in the series. He will start the season at AAA Pawtucket, where he will be the backup catcher behind George Kottaras.
Scouting Report[]
Brown is an excellent defensive catcher with a very strong arm. He works well with the pitchers and calls a solid game. He has a decent bat, gap power and average to above average plate discipline. However, he is somewhat of a streaky hitter. He has an athletic build for a catcher, won't be a threat on the basepaths.
